Badly damaged by Allied bombing in February 1945, the city has since been restored to its baroque splendor. The city is well-known not only for its three major landmarks – Zwinger Palace, Semper Opera House and the Church of Our Lady – but also for Brühl Terrace and the Royal Palace, for the Elbe Palaces on the Loschwitz hillside, for the exclusive villas of Blasewitz, the garden city and, of course, for the twelve Dresden State Art Collections.  In Dresden, join your Local Expert to see the splendours of the city. From the Frauenkirche, which has risen again from the destruction of World War II, walk past ‘The Procession of the Princes’, a mosaic of colossal proportions on the Royal Palace facade. See the enormous cathedral, Semper Opera House and Baroque Zwinger Palace. Today will be the highlight of the tour, the world-famous Passion Play. This play has been performed by the townsfolk since their ancestors made a promise to God to save the village in 1634. All the performers were either born in the town or have resided there for over 20 years. There will be time this morning to visit the wood-carvers, painters, and other shops and galleries in town.

In the afternoon and evening we will watch the performance of the play, . The Passion Play presents Christ’s Passion, beginning with His entry into Jerusalem and ending with His resurrection and transfiguration. All participants in the Passion Play must be native to Oberammergau, no small feat since there can be up to 600 elaborately costumed actors and a chorus and orchestra of 100 strong on the open-air state at one time. There is so much involved the locals start getting ready and rehearsing over a year before the event.

The afternoon and evening are dedicated to the world-famous Oberammergau Passion Play, currently performed every 10 years. The play depicts the story of Christ’s Passion, beginning with the entry into Jerusalem and ending with the resurrection and transfiguration, a moving and spectacular experience. Each performance starts at 2:30 PM (1:30 PM start time after August 17th) and ends approximately 10:30 PM (9:30 PM after August 17th), with a three-hour included dinner break/intermission from 5:00 to 8:00 PM (4:00 to 7:00 PM after August 17th). 9. Day 9 - 18 Jul, 2022 Oberammergau - Neuschwanstein - Munich [B/-/-]

After breakfast, we will continue our journey to stop at Ettal Abbey, a Benedictine monastery for centuries, following the strict monastic lifestyle while welcoming the public to its community. The basilica that acts as the monastery’s main gathering place often hosts religious holiday celebrations that attract large crowds to its domed chapel, then head over to the sanctuary of Wies, near Steingaden in Bavaria, is a pilgrimage church extraordinarily well-preserved in the beautiful setting of an Alpine valley, and is a perfect masterpiece of Rococo art and creative genius, as well as an exceptional testimony to a civilization that has disappeared

We will then drive into the garden-like landscapes of the Bavarian Alps. Wander through the scenic German countryside on your way to the legendary extravagance of the Neuschwanstein Castle. Known for their elaborate construction and world-famous architecture, these two extraordinary structures were dreamed up by Germany’s own Ludwig II, also known as the Swan King. You’ll soon find out why many believe Neuschwanstein Castle inspired Disney’s storybook castles–get ready to feel like you’re living a real-life fairy tale. Hidden in the seclusion of the mountains, German King Ludwig II built two of his dream castles: Neuschwanstein and Linderhof. Both testify to the vision of Bavaria’s fairytale King.
